Maternity Reflexology in Carmarthen

Maternity Reflexology enhances health and well-being as well as creating a wonderful caring environment for the mother and baby.

During your pregnancy, your body will go through significant changes which will affect the emotional, hormonal and physiological balance of your body.
Maternity Reflexology has been developed to meet the specific needs that pregnancy has on the body. Many of the common ailments associated with pregnancy such as morning sickness, backache, sciatica, heartburn, symphysis pubis pain and many more can be relieved with reflexology.

It is not a replacement for medical treatment, and I will always advise you to inform your midwife/GP that you are receiving reflexology.

Is Reflexology Safe During Pregnancy?

Reflexology is generally considered safe in pregnancy provided all is well with your pregnancy. There is no evidence to suggest that reflexology may cause a miscarriage.

There are some conditions where reflexology should be avoided and these include:

  • Pre-term labour - at any time before 37 weeks gestation
  • Placenta previa - if Grade II or III after 32 weeks gestation
  • Hydroamnios - too much amniotic fluid around the baby after 32 weeks gestation
  • Pre-eclampsia
  • Recent vaginal bleeding
  • Deep Vein Thrombosis

    Delivery & Induction of Labour

In a post term situation, a skilled reflexologist can help to prime (prepare for) labour.
Reflexology may stimulate the commencement of labour if the baby is overdue and both mother and baby are ready. It can help stimulate the body to produce the hormones needed for birth, although ultimately the baby decides when it is ready to come! Not even medical induction is guaranteed sucess.

Reflexology can be extremely beneficial in making labour and delivery easier. It can promote dilation, relieve the pain of labour, regulate contractions and shorten the duration of each of the stages of labour and birth.

    The Association of Reflexologists recommend:

There is some anecdotal evidence to suggest that reflexology can help to bring on labour providing both mother and baby are ready. it is always recommended that those clients who wish to use reflexology for this purpose, begin their reflexology sessions at least 6 weeks prior to their EDD. It is recommended that the reflexologist do not use labour inducing techniques unless the client has received at least two reflexology sessions in the 2 or 3 weeks prior to term and they are past their due date.

    Postnatal Care

A weekly session can help the mother adjust after giving birth. Reflexology may encourage lactation and can help the body return to normal function following delivery, whilst reducing any stress and anxiety that can arise.

    What Happens During a Treatment?

All new clients will be taken through a Maternity Reflexology Consultation in order to find out about your general state of health and well being, and to understand any pregnancy specific conditions that you may be facing.

The treatment will then be tailored to your specific needs and will include an Endocrine Balance (wonderful for calming the raging hormones!), Lymphatic Drainage to help with any fluid retention, and plenty of relaxation techniques which will help to unwind and calm both the body and mind.

    When To Commence Treatments

You can usually commence treatments at 12 to 16 weeks, but it may be more appropriate to commence treatment earlier depending on the individual's situation.

Ideally, you should receive Reflexology regularly throughout your pregnancy, as research has shown as this may result in you delivering closer to your due date and having a shorter labour than women who do not receive treatment.

In the first two trimesters monthly treatments will be sufficient. Once you move into the third trimester, fortnightly treatments would be beneficial, moving to weekly treatments in the last month.
